HOMEWORK & PLANNERS
Homework Guidelines
Over the past few years there has been a push in the District to limit the amount of homework given each night. Studies have shown that homework in the elementary grades does not improve overall academic growth, but allowing students time to engage in extra-curricular activities does. I understand that each family's needs are different and homework may be an expectation or bonding activity. Here are some additional 'homework' activities to try: family reading time, practice multiplication & division facts, write a story, take an AR quiz, complete a math page in the Eureka Succeed workbook or play Zearn and Prodigy Math games. Teach your child a card or board game to help develop problem solving skills.
**Students are excused from doing any homework on their birthday if it falls on a homework night.

Planners
Students fill in their planners each day with their nightly homework assignment(s). Students should copy the wording directly from the board since omittions can cause confusion once they get home. I do not send home homework packets because daily assignments can vary based on what we have or have not covered in class, the independent levels of the class, and the need for further practice. Parents need to sign at the bottom to verify that they have reviewed the planner and assignments with their child. Parents, please sign your FULL NAME or USE CURSIVE FOR YOUR INITIALS. Printed initials are easy to copy.
Nightly Reading is the Key to Success
A regular reading routine is very important in a child's education. Students should be in the habit of reading each night. Parents can also choose to read a book to their child. This is a good way to model fluency. When reading is specifically assigned as part of homework, students will make a record of it in their Planners. Students will write the title of the book, pages read, and time spent reading. Please note that if a student forgets this part, the expectation will be for them to make up the 20 min. of reading during their recess break.

Excuses & Consequences
If your child is absent, please contact me if you would like to pick up any missed work. Students will be given time to make up any missed work, equal to the number of days they were absent. Missing or incomplete assignments are noted in a "Missing Homework" binder and may result in a consequence, especially if it occurs regularly. Students who forgot or did not do their homework are still responsible for turning in the work! Consequences include: completing work during a recess break, missing out on a classroom treat or other special activity.
Excuses for missing or incomplete work must be explained in a note, e-mail, or message from a parent or guardian. |
